  • Successful trial demonstrating Zenova IP just 1mm thickness applied moved the EPC rating from E to D
  • Reducing heat energy consumption by over 25% thus lowering fuel bills
  • Reduces U-value by 35%
  • Reduces building CO2 carbon emissions by 19%
  • SAP score improvement of 24 points from pretrial score of 121 to 97

All the results highlight the significant impact of the Zenova IP insulation performance.

The application of Zenova IP tackles cooling, heating costs and energy consumption; all of which can be reduced accordingly.

Zenova IP provides an economically viable solution particularly given the recent implementation of the requirement in the UK that all rented residential properties meet the minimum EPC standard of C or above by 2028. The penalty for not having a valid EPC will be raised from £5,000 to £30,000 in 2028.

Zenova are pleased to announce the conclusion of this very successful AKT Project during 2022-2023 with Liverpool John Moores University.

This demonstrates the effectiveness of Zenova IP (insulating paint) which provides remediation for many buildings not only in the UK but globally in the fight against global warming and increasing insulation requirements for homes and workplaces.

We would like to thank the team at Liverpool John Moores university, headed by Dr Monower Sadique for their work and support following Zenova’s successful Innovate UK funding grant of £30,000 to undertake the trial and prepare the report.

All the results highlight the significant impact of the Zenova IP insulation performance.

Zenova CEO Tony Crawley stated

“This has been an amazing project working with Liverpool John Moores University and has demonstrated in detail the true benefits that Zenova IP can offer. We look forward to working with the University in the near future . This validates the unique effectiveness of our insulating paint, within a growing sector that is highly topical with a clear need for such products. These findings will now allow the Zenova product to work as a standalone system, or with other Products such as double glazing, solar, wall cavity to improve EPC ratings as combined systems.”

Liverpool John Moores University Dr Monower Sadique stated

“This was a very exciting project for myself and a team of five colleagues to work on, with the Zenova team. It is very rewarding when positive results from innovation come through to fruition and can make a difference in the world. A very impressive product with a very bright future “

Methodology and Trial Results

The results summary achieved from the AKT Project 2022-2023 between Liverpool John Moores University and Zenova Group Ltd, explores the performance of thermal barrier coatings in a retrofit environment. The aim of the project was to evaluate the performance a low profile, novel thermal barrier coating for use in retrofit applications. The results concluded that just 1mm of IP paint on a 1920 Brick built end of terrace house painted in one upstairs bedroom produced the improvements and benefits as set out below.

  • Collect and compare pre and post installation data for – surface and ambient temperatures, humidity, U-value and air quality.
  • Install Thermal material coating in 1920’s exemplar house.
  • Evaluate any change in energy performance of the room.
  • U-Value, thermal imaging.
  • Apply Zenova thermal coating.
  • Record post installation performance.
  • Compare Findings and Run the digital twin simulation to estimate the impact using IES Virtual Environment and EDSL TAS software Summary of the Results 1.

The Field results:

  • 1920 semi-detached two-story home with brick and plasterboard construction has the existing U-value of 3.37W/(m²K).
  • 1mm of Zenova IP painted on walls and ceiling internally.
  • Average U-value test for post-refurbishment: 2.1022 W/(m²K).
  • The improvement is 1.2678 W/(m²K).

The Digital Twin results:

  • Zenova IP has the advantage of the thickness factor against other insulation materials.
  • The thermal conductivity value of 0061 W/(m. K).
  • The U-value reduction by 09%.
  • Heating energy consumption reduction by 85%.
  • Building CO2 carbon reduction by 15%.
  • Energy Performance Asset Rating improvement from E to D.

SAP Score improvement of 24 points from the pre-refurbishment score of 121 to 97.

About Zenova Group PLC:

The Group, through Zenova Ltd, is the holder of intellectual property that underpins a suite of fire safety and temperature management products and technology. The product range is applicable to industrial, commercial, and residential markets. The Group’s solutions include fire retardant paints, insulating paints and render, fire extinguishing fluid and applications. Through innovative development, and a refined formulation and development process, Zenova provides industry leading solutions across a range of fire protection and temperature management problems, comprising:

Zenova FP

A water-based fire-protection paint that prevents ignition and spread of fire. It can be used in commercial, industrial, and domestic applications on a variety of materials, from wood to metal.

Zenova FX

Patent pending fire extinguisher filled with proprietary Zenova Fluid (Zenova FXB) that extinguishes all types of fires, reduces chances of re-ignition, works in cold (-15 ̊C) conditions, is non-toxic and does not produce harmful by-products.

Zenova FX500

A high-performance handheld fire extinguisher that is tested by independent experts and adheres to the highest industry standards. The fire extinguisher is safe to use on any type of fire, reduces the risk of reignition once the fire has been extinguished and has been tested to the BS 6165 standard. It boasts an efficient and compact design, allowing for it to be dispersed from any 360° orientation, which ensures that the Zenova FX500 is convenient to handle and simple to operate while providing the user with a highly effective and fast working fire extinguisher.

Zenova IP

Thermal insulation paint that creates a thermal barrier, provides thermal reflection of sunrays and infrared radiation, anti-condensation, and anti-mould properties. It can be applied to virtually any exterior or interior material, regardless of the surface.

Zenova IR

Thermal insulation render to enhance the effectiveness of insulation by creating a thermo shield. It fills all cavities and gaps regardless of geometric shape and creates a vacuum – the most effective insulator.

Zenova WB

A wildfire barrier fluid (applied via spray wands or aerial drops), which provides a virtual barrier where fire simply will not burn. Repeated tests on a variety of extremely dry wildfire fuels (grasses, hays, brush) demonstrates the incredible fire resistance Zenova WB provides, while remaining viable after application for 30+ days in dry conditions.

Zenova CS

Patent pending next generation ceiling sprinkler filled with proprietary Zenova Fluid (Zenova FXB) that removes the need to install large fluid tanks, piping, complicated equipment, and software. This sprinkler could be installed in the kitchen.

The Group has achieved this without compromising the sustainability of natural and economical resources, including personal health and safety, with ecologically sound products.
